Police Chief on Virginia Beach Shooting: Officers Had Long-Term, Large Gunfight with Suspect

‘This was not what is traditionally a police-involved shooting’

REPORTER: "And did he say anything according to officers who were there? Did he say anything at all that you heard while the shots were being fired or before he was hit by police?"
CERVERA: "No, they didn’t have any engagement with him verbally. Once they identified him, he identified them, he immediately opened fire, we immediately returned the fire. And again, I want everyone to know that this was a long-term, lack of any other term, running gun battle with this individual. This was not what is traditionally a police-involved shooting. This was a long-term, large gunfight."
